Virtual Tour of El Torcal de Antequera

In this post you can see the Torcal de Antequera thanks to a 360º virtual tour, view images of the whimsical shapes of its rocks and get information on hiking trails. The Torcal de Antequera is a natural site located about fifty kilometers from the city of Malaga, in the municipalities of Antequera and Villanueva de la Concepción. It is visited annually by thousands of people due to the capricious forms that the erosive agents have been moderating in its limestone rocks, forming one of the most impressive karst landscapes in Europe. The site is dominated by limestone, rocks more than 150 million years old, formed by marine sediments very sensitive to erosion and that make the environment an ideal place for the practice of caving.

The Torcal de Antequera is considered a Natural Site and Special Area of Conservation for the Protection of Birds.

Let’s get to know some of its history

For this we must go back some 200 million years ago, when Europe was submerged under the sea of Tetis, when the accumulation and deposit of skeletons, shells and shells of animals on the seabed began. This process lasts about 180 million years, a period in which they accumulate and compact at different levels, forming horizontal strata that as a consequence of the thrust between the tectonic plates have been compressed, deformed and fractured until they slowly emerge to the surface, a period in which their slow but continuous erosion begins.

The torcal of Antequera has a visitor center that has different areas and services to facilitate an enjoyable and educational visit to it. We highlight the interpretive area, the multipurpose room, the observatory, the souvenir store and a small but very cozy restaurant-cafeteria. All these services will guarantee a day of full contact with nature in one of the most beautiful and curious areas of the Costa del Sol.

The interpretive area consists of a modern building whose architecture seeks to integrate into the environment and offers numerous interactive equipment to provide visitors with a better understanding and training of the most unique aspects of the torcal such as its fauna, vegetation and history.

Astronomical observatory

This curious natural park has an astronomical observatory for public use with activities open all year round, as well as other special activities designed for schools or tourist groups. This observatory dedicates part of its time to its own research thanks to its powerful instruments and its privileged location. The observations are not only nocturnal but also daytime, with the sun as the object of study and have a duration of approximately two hours. For the general public the night observations will be mainly on Saturdays and some Fridays of the year while the daytime observations will be on some Sundays. For more details, I leave the link to the Torcal Astronomical Observatory where you can get more information, schedules and cost.

El Torcal de Antequera routes:

There are two hiking trails in the area; the yellow one of 3 kilometers and medium difficulty and the green of 1.5 km and low to medium difficulty. In the interactive virtual tour published here, it is possible to walk the green route and observe in 360° the different areas and their curious karst formations. Soon I will also incorporate the yellow route to be able to visit it in an interactive way.

How to get to the Torcal de Antequera:

The torcal can be accessed by car from Antequera and Villanueva de la Concepción but it should be noted that the upper parking is limited to a certain number of vehicles. Once this is completed, the vehicle must be left in the lower parking lot and access to it on foot or with a small bus at a cost of €1.5 per passenger round trip. This tour lasts no more than 5 minutes and will be provided from the time that vehicle access is restricted until the closing time of the visitor center.

For more information about the trekking routes, I invite you to visit Manuel’s blog where there are lots of pictures of each route and extensive information.
